HOWTO Make RSSOwl into a Portable Application

March 9, 2010

RSSOwl is the best desktop news aggregrator out there. It’s not the simplest but once you get the hang of it, it’s many powerful features make scanning dozens of feeds as easy as pie. Unfortunately, by default, RSSOwl is not a portable application. Because it stores all of its data in the user’s home directory you can’t just throw it on a usb drive and take it with you. But (surprise surprise) this is pretty easy to fix. To do so, you have to edit the $EXECUTABLE_DIRECTORY/configuration/config.ini file. In this file set osgi.instance.area.default=.rssowl and osgi.configuration.area=.rssowl2/config200. (Remove the references to @user.home). Once you do this RSSOwl will work like a champ from a usb drive as you move from computer to computer.

FYI this should work with any application built on the Eclipse Rich Client Platform.
